Let your light shine!

Oak 2023 - 2024

Welcome to Year 6 Oak Class!

Welcome to the third and final term of Year 6! It is going to be a VERY busy term and we have lots of really exciting things to look forward to.

The children have an amazing opportunity to "Let Their Light Shine!" with the end of key stage 2 SATs in May, where every day in SATs week will start with a fabulous breakfast at our SATs breakfast club, preparing our brains ready to SHOW OFF our wonderful learning.

The residential trip to High Adventure will follow SATs and be a great way to end the first half term.

In English, along with some SATs revision, we will be looking at War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. This historical fiction text set in 1914, follows Joey, a wonderful and hard-working horse and his owner Albert as lives drastically change with the onset of WW1.  This incredibly moving and emotive novel gives year 6 a great introduction into our next history unit of 20th Century Conflict, as well as developing the reading skills and giving some amazing tools for our writing toolkit.

In the summer term, we will also cover Shakespeare, looking at his sonnets and Macbeth. We will also be linking the novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief to out history unit on the Ancient Greeks.

In science we will be completing our unit on Evolution and Inheritance before embarking on our units of Light and Electricity throughout the summer term.

In RE, we will be exploring Life as a Journey and Pilgrimage, before spending 4 weeks looking at other world faiths.

Our wider curriculum topics will be to complete our art unit, looking at painting and digital art, linked to Wassily Kandinsky and Joan Miro.

Our history units that will be covered in the summer term, will be 20th Century Conflicts and The Ancient Greeks.

Please continue to support your child with their learning as much as possible. Lots of reading at home has the power to help your child reach their full potential. Please also try and mark your child's homework with them at home - this has far more impact than me marking it.
