Summer 1

What's going well in history:

  • All children could tell me that lessons started with retrieval and how this helped them to remember what they had previously learned.
  • All children have had access to artefacts in some form over the year and were positive about using these.
  • All children have either enjoyed a trip or a visitor to do with history over the year.
  • The children said that most of their lessons were more hands on and they loved these activities for learning.
  • Most classes said their teachers were engaged in the lessons and showed enjoyment when teaching history.
  • Some classes could tell me that they were reading books in story time or Talk Through Stories which supported their history and made it more exciting.

History would be even better if:

  • All children were familiar with the symbols used for skills and could explain what this meant in history. e.g. someone in UKS2 thought that we observed over time rather than carrying out historical enquiry.
  • Most children agreed that they would benefit from less writing and more exploring.
