Phonics is delivered daily to all children in Early Years and KS1. Certain children in KS2 also have phonics interventions when needed. Phonics is a twenty minute structured session. Each session consists of a revisit, learning a new sound, practising the new sound and then finally applying the new sound. We follow Read Write Inc in order to teach phonics at All Saints'. Please see you child's timetable to see when phonics is taught in your child's class.
Children are assessed throughout each half term on their ability to remember sounds and apply the sounds when spelling and writing.
A phonics screening check is run for all year 1 children and for those children in year 2 who did not pass the year previous. Results will be in your child's report at the end of the academic year. We will provide further information on the screening test later in the academic year. Please follow the following link for information and guidance on the screening test and to see the screening test from last year. This should hopefully give you an idea of what the test will look like and how it will run.
We have already held two parent workshops to help with phonics this academic year:
1. Thursday 26th September 2019 - 2:45pm - 3:15pm.
2. Tuesday 1st October 2019 - 5:45pm - 6:15pm
Further workshops will run throughout the year. Parents/ guardians will be invited to observe their child in a phonics session.
If you have any questions please contact Miss Fishwick (phonics lead) or ask your child's class teacher.
