Geography

It was wonderful having the opportunity to speak with the Geography Curriculum Champions and they were all very enthusiastic about their Geography learning in school. The children enjoyed sharing their Geography learning with the other year groups and they all said that they have found their lessons so far informative and engaging,

  • Using retrieval to check their current and prior geography learning as it helped them to recall and remember their geography learning in previous year groups.
  • The children were enthusiastic about completing mini quizzes as part of retrieval.
  • They feel that discussing the vocabulary linked to the lesson has helped them to better understand the lesson content.
  • Pupils who have used digital maps as part of their geography learning have found it useful and were positive about using Digi maps and google earth to enhance their knowledge and understanding of maps and different localities.
  • In classes where fieldwork has taken place in line with Geography coverage were able to recall and discuss the mapping/compass skills they had been using and also went on to discuss the human and physical features in our locality.
  • The children are proud of their geography work and expressed that they take care with their work so that it is as good as if not even better that their English work.
  • Children who have used videos and songs stated that they have really helped them to recall and remember geography facts and information such as, singing the continents song in Year 1.

EBI

  • In some classes the children have not yet accessed google earth and Digi maps and they would like to use digital maps as part of their geography learning as they stated that it helps to bring Geography ‘alive’ as it makes it real for them.
  • Children would like more fieldwork opportunities as they said that it helps to bring geography alive and it helps them to improve their map work and their knowledge and understanding of their locality.
  • The children were unaware of where the geography display was in school, so we went to look at it and to discuss the impact that it had in school. The children stated that they liked to progression, but it could be more interactive and colourful.
  • The children expressed an interest in improving the display using thought and speech bubbles so that children can share their knowledge and thoughts based on their learning. The children will be involved in the development of the geography display after half term. This should also support pupil voice linked with Geography.
  • Children said that they found exit tickets useful in summarising their learning in geography lessons and they feel that it helps them to remember more about their geography learning. Year 6 stated that they used an effective website to complete their exit tickets on. Moving forwards Exit tickets would be useful in supporting the children with their self assessment.

Some super geography work is taking place in school, well done, everyone!!
