Computing

Autumn 1 Feedback-

Our Computing Curriculum Champions have shared their views on what they enjoy about computing, what they would like to see developed further and how we can continue to support pupils to become confident, creative and safe digital citizens.

WWW- What’s Working Well

💻 Enjoying coding and creativity

Pupils particularly enjoy using Turtle Academy to develop their coding skills. They recognise that coding is an enjoyable and valuable skill that could support future career opportunities.

They also enjoy using Scratch to create animations and make characters perform fun dances, showing how computing provides opportunities for creativity, problem-solving and independent learning.

🌍 Understanding the digital world

Pupils value learning about how the internet connects people across the world. They enjoy exploring how the internet is used globally and developing their understanding of the ways technology helps people communicate and share information.

They also appreciate learning practical digital skills, such as copying and pasting, which they can apply when creating websites and completing other digital projects.

📊 Using digital tools for learning

Pupils value having access to platforms such as Microsoft Teams, particularly because it brings together a range of useful learning tools and applications, including PowerPoint. They recognise the importance of these tools in supporting their learning across the curriculum.

🔒 Staying safe online

Pupils demonstrate an awareness of important online safety rules. They understand that they should not communicate with strangers online or share their passwords with others. They also recognise the importance of protecting their identity, including being cautious about sharing photographs of themselves wearing school uniform.

These responses show that pupils are developing an understanding of how to keep themselves safe and protect their personal information online.

EBI- Even Better If

🎵 More opportunities to use technology creatively

Pupils would welcome more opportunities to use computers regularly and develop their confidence through practical, hands-on experiences. They would particularly enjoy exploring how to use technology to create music, alongside existing opportunities for coding and digital creativity.

📱 Creating apps that support learning

Our Computing Curriculum Champions have suggested some exciting ideas for apps that could support learning across the curriculum, including:

  • A maths app: An application featuring instructional videos to help pupils understand mathematical concepts and support their classwork.
  • A writing support app: A tool designed to help pupils develop their writing skills and become more confident writers.
  • An interactive handwriting app: A tracing application where pupils earn gems to customise or develop an avatar as they complete activities. Pupils could progress through different stages, building their confidence from letter formation towards fluent, joined-up handwriting.

These ideas highlight pupils’ enthusiasm for using technology to make learning engaging, interactive and rewarding.

🖥️ Maintaining access to familiar digital platforms

Although pupils would like more opportunities to explore different technologies, they also highlighted the importance of retaining Microsoft Teams. They value having access to the range of applications available through the platform, particularly PowerPoint, which supports their learning and creativity.
